Our Keynote Speaker, Allison Reid
We are delighted have have Allison Reid, Wake County Public School's Teacher of the Year, joining us at this year's Boot Camp. Her work as a high school English teacher at Heritage High School has not only incorporated technology to support student centered learning, but focuses on students' future role in society. “Technology requires students to learn constructively and collaborate in ways that traditional methods of instruction do not,” Reid said. “Leveraging technology promises answers to student engagement concerns, as well as concerns about preparing students for jobs that don’t even exist yet in the modern workforce.”
Allison's work has enabled her to also become the lead English teacher in the new Game Art and Design Academy at Heritage. She has been teaching for eight years, the last three at Heritage High. She is working on her Master’s in Instructional Technology from N.C. State University and will finish this summer.
Reid has been an Academy Instructor for the Wake County Summer Institute for teachers leading sessions titled "Google Docs to Transform Your Teaching," "Twitterize Your Classroom," and "Integrating Technology into the English Classroom."
Heritage High Assistant Principal Jody Hinds says Allison is the consummate professional. “Her students consistently use technology to capitalize on their different learning styles and demonstrate their understanding of concepts,” Hinds said. “Ms. Reid recently created a lesson using an augmented App which required students to show connection between pop culture and the Transcendentalist Era of American Literature.”
Allison says building relationships with students is important. “I believe that you must earn the right to challenge a student to go beyond what they deem themselves capable of,” Reid said. “It is through relationships with individual students that you can really push them. I think that is my greatest strength as a teacher.”
